The house

We were a workshop before we were a brand. Three generations of carpenters, polishers and upholsterers in Jodhpur, making for other people's names.

Charpai brought that making under one roof in 2019, with its own drawing office and its own standard of finish. What changed was not the craft. It was the design — the decision that a piece made in Jodhpur should hold its own in any room, anywhere, without announcing where it came from.

Today the house covers the whole interior: loose and fixed furniture, modular kitchen and wardrobe, upholstery and furnishing fabric, curtains and blinds, mattresses, flooring and wall surfaces. One survey, one drawing, one team on site.

Craft

A room is measured before it is designed.

Most of what goes wrong in an interior goes wrong before anything is made. So the work starts with a survey — a plan, each wall photographed, and the details that decide a fit. Everything after that follows a drawing, not a conversation.

Drawing

References translated into a technical drawing. Dimension, section and joinery resolved, with polish, fabric and quantity called out before a cut is made.

Making

Carpentry, polish and upholstery on our own floor. The same hands that have worked this timber since the sixties, working now to a drawn specification.

Finish

Checked against the drawing, corrected, and packed on the floor — not at the door. A finish is judged in daylight, close up.

Install

Delivered and fitted by the team that made it, with the room handed over complete rather than in parts.

Private clients

A single piece or an entire house. We survey, draw and make to your room and your use — including the pieces you already own and want matched.

Architects and designers

Drawings read and quoted as issued. Samples, finish boards and dimensioned shop drawings before production, and one point of contact through the build.

Hospitality and institutional

Repeat runs made to a fixed specification, with a first-off sample approved before the batch and a schedule you can plan a handover against.

Dimension: Every piece cut to the room. Nothing is standardised because a standard size fits somewhere else.
Timber and finish: Species, grain direction and polish specified together — matt, satin, open-pore or high-build, matched to a sample you hold in your hand.
Upholstery: Fabric or leather from our own house or yours, with fill, edge and stitch detail chosen for how the piece will actually be sat in.
Curtains and blinds: Set inside or outside the frame, motorised or manual, with the track detailed before the ceiling is closed.
Modular: Kitchen and wardrobe planned to the wall as built — including a wall that isn't true — with internal layouts and shutter profiles resolved on drawing.
Surfaces: Flooring laid with skirting or beading as the room asks. Wall surfaces surveyed for flatness and moisture before anything is ordered.

Since 1962

1962

The family begins making furniture in Jodhpur — carpentry, polish and upholstery, working alongside the city's own trades and the sandstone it is built from.

2019

Charpai is founded. The workshop's making is brought under one contemporary house, with a drawing office, a design language of its own, and a name on the work for the first time.

Today

Furniture, modular and furnishings under one roof — for private houses, for architects and designers, and for hospitality projects at scale.

Sixty years of making, and a house young enough to draw it differently.

Showroom

Come and judge the finish yourself.

Furniture photographs well and wears badly. The showroom exists so you can open a drawer, run a hand along a polish, and sit in something long enough to know.

Bring a plan if you have one, and an afternoon if you can. Consultations run long by design.
